What is a degenerative or neurological condition?

Neurological conditions are progressive and many symptoms can develop in people affected by these diseases.  Symptoms are specific to our client’s needs, and we tailor our care delivery to these. We follow NICE guidance and strategies offered by neuro therapists to optimise mobility, daily living, swallowing and communication.

Neurological conditions are life-limiting, however the life expectancy for someone living with the condition varies greatly. A few people live for many years or even decades. Therefore, the care required for someone living with these types of conditions can be complex and varied based on their individual care requirements. Some of our clients can remain living as independently as possible, having a small care team in place to support them with day-to-day tasks, whilst others may require more complex interventions and full-time support. Whatever your requirements we can help you to live well at home.

Living with a neurological condition

Movement, mobility, speech and communication are the key functions that are affected by neurological conditions, impacting how an individual can operate on a day-to-day basis. The condition can cause weakness in the tongue, lips, vocal cords and chest, which can have an impact on the ability to communicate through speech as well as affecting gesture and facial expression.

Symptoms get gradually worse over time. Moving around, swallowing, and breathing can get increasingly difficult, and treatments like a feeding tube or breathing air through a face mask may be needed.
