Since returning home with a personalised, nurse-led complex care package, Gemma has made significant progress both emotionally and physically. The consistency and quality of her care have enabled her to rebuild confidence, engage meaningfully in rehabilitation, and reconnect with the life she loves.
A particularly positive outcome has been the carefully matched relationship between Gemma and her carers, Sam, Monika, Kirstan, and Kat. Matched not only on clinical skills, but also on personality, interests, and values, and subsequently they have developed a strong, trusting bond and often describe themselves as feeling like old friends. Sam’s background as ex-military, a personal trainer, and yoga instructor has brought a fresh and motivating approach to Gemma’s rehabilitation, helping her stay active, positive, and focused on her goals.
Over the past year, Gemma has enjoyed many memorable experiences, including attending the King’s Garden Party, where she had the honour of meeting Princess Anne, and returning to the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Championships, not as a competitor this time, but as a judge. She also enjoyed a brilliant day at Stanhope Show with her dog, Sage, proudly coming home with a second-place rosette.
Most recently, Gemma and Optimal Spirit (also known as Charlie) were named winners of the RoR Partnership of the Year Award, a moment that truly captured the heart of her journey. This recognition celebrates far more than an award – it honours the unwavering bond, trust, and quiet strength between Gemma and Charlie, a partnership that has carried her through some of the most challenging moments of her recovery. Charlie has been a constant source of comfort, motivation, and hope, lifting Gemma’s spirits on difficult days and reminding her of who she is beyond her injury.
Supporting Gemma to continue nurturing this relationship reflects the very heart of person-centred care, protecting what matters most to her, enabling passion, and helping her live a life filled with purpose, connection, and joy.
As Gemma reaches one year of being back at home with her mum, she is preparing for an exciting next chapter – moving together into a new, fully adapted home that will further support her independence, rehabilitation, and long-term goals.
Supported by a dedicated, consistent care team, Gemma continues to build independence, pursue new opportunities, and look forward to a future filled with confidence, connection, and possibility.
At Apollo Home Healthcare, we are proud to support Gemma with bespoke, nurse-led complex care at home, enabling her to live safely, independently, and with purpose, in the place where she thrives best.
